Westminster United Church

“We are journeying together in God’s love . . .

 to discover, nurture and share our gifts.”

June 29, 2008

Relationships that exemplify hospitality involve both giving and receiving. Welcoming one another in Jesus’ name sets the stage for sacramental moments. We may encounter in another the presence of God. Another may experience in us the grace of Christ. We trust God to provide what will be needed.

If you would like to stay seated for any or all of the “standing” parts of the service, please feel free to do so.

We Gather To Worship God

Prelude

Sharing Announcements

A Time of Greeting

A time of silent preparation—Lighting the Christ Candle

Call to Worship (Responsive)

One:     For the joy and inspiration of worship,

All:      “the Lord will provide.”

One:     For the deepening of faith within this community of Faith,

All:      “the Lord will provide.”

One:     For the strength to endure the hard places of life,

All:      “the Lord will provide.”

One:     For the courage to face the unknown future,

All:      “the Lord will provide.” Let us worship God!

Opening Prayer (Responsive)

One:     God, you accept and bless us;

All:      we know this, for you have given us a good earth, and the opportunity to live peacefully here.

One:     God, you accept and bless us;

All:      for you have placed us in families and with friends, to know the experience of your love.

One:     God, you accept and bless us;

All:      this is our certainty, for you have given us this church in which to worship and to serve.

One:     God, you accept and bless us;

All:      and in Jesus we encounter a pattern of compassion and an invitation to life.

Hymn # 570 “Jesus’ Hands Were Kind Hands”

Prayer for Transformation & Words of Assurance

One:     Welcoming God, we come gently before you.

All:      We confess we have fallen short of the life to which love inspires us. Love’s pattern of selflessness in Jesus is clear to us, dear to us, but we have often chosen to ignore it.

One:     In Jesus, we have seen what it is to follow the path of pilgrimage and adventure,

All:      but so often we are insecure, and live by what we know.

One:     In Jesus, we have seen what it is to get to know some very different people, surprising people, challenging people.

All:      So often we stay with family, friends, and those familiar over the years.

One:     In Jesus, we have seen what it means to stand with the poor, the disadvantaged, and those who feel lonely;

All:      we find it hard to stand with those who experience life as a struggle, or who are depressed.

One:     In Jesus, we have seen what it means to resist temptation, obvious and subtle;

All:      we confess we have given in…(time for silent reflection)

Friendship Rosters: Please sign the Friendship Roster this morning. It is a helpful record of your worship presence and a way to share special concerns (ie. Prayer requests, name tag requests, etc.)

The duty rosters for Ushers & Greeters, Bulletin Folders and Coffee Hosts are on the peg board by Memorial Hall.

Summer Worship Schedule: Again this summer the congregations of Fifth Avenue Memorial and Westminster United Churches shall gather in shared worship. The services in July will be held at WUC. The services in August will be held at FAM and all services will begin at 10:00 a.m. The WUC church office will be closed from July 29 – August 19th.

After 15 years as our church treasurer, Al Pols is retiring. Please join Al for cake and fellowship during coffee time today. This will be a chance for us to say “thank you” to Al for his years of dedicated service to Westminster.

After 35 wonderful years of being a nanny I'm retiring this month. I am thankful to have been able to do what I love and I have loved every minute of what I've been doing. I'm sharing this with you so you can celebrate with me! Linda Kinvig.

The UCW are in need of more good china tea cups and saucers for use at their teas. If you have any you would like to donate, we would appreciate having them.

Are you on PAR?  Are you are interested in the Pre-Authorized Remittance (PAR) system for your offerings? Your donations are deducted once a month just like your mortgage, etc. It is convenient for both YOU and YOUR church. Contact Donna Scharf at 526-1555 for more information.

Canyon Church Camp: Camping Season is approaching. For more information, registration forms and camp dates are posted on the bulletin board for the Summer Program.

Camp Shagabec: Registration forms and camp dates are on the bulletin board. There are also summer job opportunities available for this camp. Applications for these opportunities are available in the office.

Would you like to sponsor a child for Camp Shagabec?  At present, there are more children needing sponsorship to attend camp than there is money available to cover their cost.  If you are interested, please contact Anne in the church office.

Does anyone collect Canadian Tire money? If so, would you like to donate it to Camp Shagabec? Please drop off donations at the church office, knowing your donation will offset camp expenses.
