Westminster United Church

“We are journeying together in God’s love . . . to discover, nurture and share our gifts.”

June 14, 2009

Small things break open the world of God’s love and the flourishing of God’s realm among us. The heart-sight of God gives place and significance to those who have been overlooked. Trust in these workings of God subverts human wisdom about power and the future. We are invited to imagine how, in God’s realm, things are not as the world anticipates.

We Gather To Worship God

Prelude / Sharing Announcements / A Time of Greeting

A time of silent preparation—Lighting the Christ Candle

Call to Worship (Responsive)

One:   Come into this place where the ordinary is holy,

All:    the human is celebrated, compassion is expected.

One:   Come into this place.

All:    Together we make it a holy place. Let us celebrate the richness and diversity of life in the presentness of the Divine.

Opening Prayer (Unison)

May we listen to our inner spirit, to the inner yearning to belong to something greater than ourselves. May we listen to our inner spirit and find the presence of that which encourages us. Amen.

Hymn #409 “Morning Has Broken”

The Sunday School leave for their classes.

Prayer for Transformation & Words of Assurance

One:   As in the seed there is the potential for growth and wonderful change, so we think of the change that one small act may bring to life;

All:    a church member advertises a meeting to found a hospice for the dying.

One:   We think of the change that one small act may bring to life:

All:    a fellow worker with an addiction is put in touch with a 12-step group.

One:   We think of the change that one small act may bring to life:

All:    a bereaved person without cooking skills is given his first lesson by a neighbour.

One:   We think of the change that one small act may bring to life:

All:    facing a major decision, we find a trusted friend who listens without judging … (time for silent reflection)

Words of Assurance (One)

As we increase our faith in our ability to be channels of the Divine, we may achieve more than we could ever dream, or hope, or aspire to. Then we will know the peace which passes all understanding. Amen.

Board Report

Grace and Boyd Alcock presented and discussed a report from Alberta and Northwest Conference held May 22-24, 2009. The website for the church is undergoing some renovations. The Fall Supper has been set for Sat. Oct. 24. Darcy Fox will coordinate getting people to sit on the Joint Needs Assessment Committee. This committee needs to be in place before the end of June so they can begin their work. Four members of the congregation have registered for a presentation by Bruce Sanguin author of The Emerging Church. The information gained shall be used to review Westminster’s mission and vision. Ted Sherring’s resignation from the Board was received with regrets. The Board now enters summer recess and will only meet if there is an urgent matter.
