Westminster United Church

“We are journeying together in God’s love . . .

to discover, nurture, and share our gifts.”

March 21, 2010 – Lent V

God promises something new is on the way. The whole creation reflects God’s fresh workings. Tears yield to joy. The past makes room for the future. Gestures of extravagant love and devotion abound. The people of God see a way where once there had seemed to be no way. The springing forth of God’s future encourages us to move into it with confidence.

If you would like to stay seated for any or all of the “standing” parts of the service, please feel free to do so.

Need a refuge? Our Nursery is located off Memorial Hall, has a speaker system through which to hear the service, and exists for all who may need this space. Memorial Hall approach is via the pulpit side exit.

All:  we are happy to gather together.

One: In solidarity with those who struggle
All:  we are happy to gather together.

One: In memory of Jesus, who lived with compassion
All:  we are happy to gather together in this Lenten season.

Opening Prayer (Unison)

May the Transforming One within, spring forth in our dreaming hearts winding in and through this place bearing us forward, ever forward, along paths of justice, rivers of mercy, and fountains of shalom. Amen.

Hymn #215 “Hope of the World”(vv. 1, 2, 3, 5; tune #586)

Conversation Time

The Sunday School & Youth leave for their classes.

Prayer for Transformation(Unison)

As we open ourselves to the promise of each moment, may we open, also, the hidden doors that keep us one from the other. Hung on perfect hinges, a mere breath might swing them wide, perfectly, silently, open. In that moment, we would be free. As we work toward a time when all our differences, all our challenges, all our myriad perspectives can be swept aside as doors swing wide between us, may we know moments of that perfect freedom, that intermingling of souls, and ever yearn to make it so … (time for silent reflection)

The dynamics of power in our world as we begin the journey through Holy Week will be explored. What are the temptations of power for the followers of Jesus? There are good questions to talk about, a provoking drama to witness, and some haunting music to draw us toward the Cross. Leaders come from several local churches, but the gathering takes place at St. John’s Presbyterian Church from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Hot cross buns will be served.

Mission is all around us.

Board Report Summary:

We are still trying to fill the position of board secretary. Our Child Protection and Duty of Care policy continues to evolve and the board has approved the adoption of the policy for WUC. Spring Brunch will be held May 9, with no ticket presale but a free-will offering collected instead. A bell will be installed at the bottom of the chair lift so those needing to can ring for assistance with the chair. The Board approved buying a new printer for office to replace the current one which no longer works. The projector and screen have been cleaned and repositioned courtesy of Phil Stark. -  submitted by Dawn Skogen
