“We are journeying together in God’s love . . .
to discover, nurture, and share our gifts.”
June 13, 2010
This morning we welcome Rev. Bob Cruickshank as our Worship Leader.
God’s sons and daughters are called to live lives that are holy and just. The choices we make each day have consequences. God does not delight in wickedness, and holds those who perpetuate injustice responsible. This judgement stands in tension with God’s welcome for those who turn to God for forgiveness. God’s people can take courage in choosing justice.
If you would like to stay seated for any or all of the “standing” parts of the service, please feel free to do so.
Need a refuge? Our Nursery is located off Memorial Hall, has a speaker system through which to hear the service, and exists for all who may need this space. Memorial Hall approach is via the pulpit side exit.
Prelude / Sharing Announcements / A Time of Greeting
Call to Worship (Responsive)
One: The welcoming approach of Jesus
All: becomes our welcome, to all who gather in this church.
One: The inspiring words of Jesus
All: become our words of assurance and forgiveness, and our call to avoid a judgmental stance.
One: The faithful way of Jesus
All: becomes our way of acceptance and challenge, and our concern for the powerless and depressed.
One: The compassionate ministry of Jesus
All: becomes our response to our ministry of healing, listening, and care.
You claim us as Your people, O God, and we praise You! You gather us so that we may remember our heritage and those who have served before us, and we praise You, O God! You call us to celebrate our life together as community, and we praise You, O God! We gather to plant the seeds of hope and renewal, with confidence in the future of Your Church, globally and locally…And we praise You, O God!
Hymn #264 “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise”
Coloring packets for the children are available in the first pew on the pulpit side of the church.
One: A woman with a wayward past comes to visit Jesus.
All: Jesus meets her without judgment or prejudice. Would we have welcomed her attention?
One: The woman anoints Jesus with costly ointment.
All: Would we have appreciated her generosity, or suggested the money could have been used for charitable purposes?
One: The Pharisee is surprised that Jesus has welcomed her loving act.
All: Do we not judge people by their reputation and by the company they keep?
One: Jesus held up her action as an example of compassion, and was quick to make clear that she had been forgiven of her past.
All: Would we have seen the woman in such a compassionate light, and would we have been as ready to offer her forgiveness? … (time for silent reflection)
Words of Assurance (One)
Hear the Good News! Christ has died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Friends, believe the Gospel…in Jesus Christ you are forgiven.
